Nio is an EV manufacturer from China and the world’s largest operator of battery swapping networks for smart electric vehicles. Nio’s innovative approach allows drivers to change the battery instead of enduring the long charging process. Charging takes at least 40 minutes, resulting in long queues at charging stations. Swapping a depleted battery for a fully charged one takes less than 5 minutes.
This swift and efficient solution offers a promising alternative to one of the critical EV’s shortcomings compared to vehicles with the internal combustion engine. So far, Nio has over 2,100 Power-swap Stations up and running worldwide. To this day, it has provided over 32 million battery swaps for users.
Battery swapping agreement
The benefits of the battery swapping platform are recognized by two major Chinese EV manufacturers, Changan Automobile and Geely Holding Group. In accordance with the agreement and through a “co-investment, co-construction, shared, co-operative” model, Nio and its partners will co-develop battery swapping standards for private cars and commercial vehicles.
Agreements Nio signed with its partners will accelerate the development and promotion of battery swapping technology on the vehicle end. It will also expand the operational scale of battery swapping to provide more convenient, comprehensive, and safe services for users with different needs. All parties will establish an efficient battery asset management mechanism, build a unified battery swap operation, and develop battery swappable vehicles compatible with each other’s battery swap systems.
