Xpeng is making bold moves in China’s competitive electric vehicle market with the upcoming launch of its G7 SUV. The company began pre-sales on June 11, and the response was immediate—over 10,000 pre-orders were placed within just 46 minutes. Although Xpeng hasn’t confirmed the exact release date, the timing seems strategic. Xiaomi’s highly anticipated YU7 SUV will officially launch on June 26, and the proximity of the two events suggests Xpeng aims to share the spotlight.

The G7 is positioned between the G6 and the flagship G9 in Xpeng’s lineup, starting at approximately $32,810. By launching the G7 close to Xiaomi’s YU7 release, Xpeng is likely looking to capture attention and market share ahead of what could be Xiaomi’s most impactful EV release yet.

A Tale of Two SUVs: Size, Specs, and Smart Features

Both the Xpeng G7 and Xiaomi YU7 are mid-size to large SUVs, but their specs reveal unique identities. The G7 measures 4,892 mm long with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm, while Xiaomi’s YU7 is slightly larger, offering a 3,000 mm wheelbase. Where Xpeng really shines is in tech. The G7 is available in Max and Ultra variants, both built on an 800-volt architecture, featuring a 5C fast-charging battery and a CLTC range of 702 kilometers.

The G7 Ultra stands out as the first production car equipped with Xpeng’s in-house Turing AI chip, offering L3-level autonomous computing power with over 2,200 TOPS. By comparison, the Max model uses dual Nvidia Orin X chips. This move solidifies Xpeng’s ambition to lead the AI-driven vehicle segment.

Xiaomi YU7: Newcomer with Big Expectations

Xiaomi, best known for smartphones and consumer electronics, is quickly establishing itself as a formidable EV contender. Following the strong market performance of its SU7 sedan—with over 28,000 units delivered in May alone—Xiaomi is now banking on the YU7 SUV to expand its EV footprint. The YU7 has reportedly garnered even more pre-order interest than the SU7, according to company president Lu Weibing.

The YU7 will debut alongside other new Xiaomi products, including the MIX Flip 2 foldable smartphone and the Pad 7S Pro tablet. The SUV itself is expected to rival Tesla’s Model Y, both in performance and tech integration. Pricing will be revealed just 1–2 days before launch, but expectations are that it will stay below Xpeng’s G7 starting price.

Xpeng G7 and Xiaomi YU7: Can They Succeed in Europe?

As the Xpeng G7 and Xiaomi YU7 prepare to make waves in China, their prospects in Europe are also a hot topic. Both brands have signaled international ambitions, but breaking into the European EV market won’t be easy. EU regulations, tariffs on Chinese EVs, and a strong local presence from brands like Tesla, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Renault pose significant challenges. The European Union is also considering stricter import duties on Chinese-made EVs, which could raise prices and reduce competitiveness.

On the other hand, features like long-range performance, advanced autonomous driving systems, and aggressive pricing could give the G7 and YU7 an edge if pricing stays favorable. Xpeng already has a limited presence in several EU countries, and Xiaomi’s brand recognition among tech-savvy Europeans could aid a smoother entry. However, aftersales support, dealership networks, and consumer trust will play a decisive role. Success in Europe will depend on how these companies navigate regulatory frameworks and deliver localized services that match or exceed expectations set by established players.
