The Volkswagen ID.3 Neo is essentially a heavily updated version of Volkswagen’s electric hatchback, designed to address many of the criticisms aimed at earlier ID models. Compared with the original car, the Neo brings improved interior materials, more physical controls, updated software and better overall efficiency.

The ID.3 Neo is using the updated MEB+ platform with rear wheel drive, while the updated drivetrain lineup now includes 125 kW, 140 kW and 170 kW versions depending on trim and battery size. Buyers can choose between 50 kWh, 58 kWh and 79 kWh battery packs.

The biggest headline figure is range. In its most efficient configuration, the ID.3 Neo now reaches up to 629 km WLTP, while DC fast charging peaks at 183 kW on larger battery versions. The Atto 3’s biggest strengths are equipment levels and everyday usability. Even the base trim comes well equipped, and BYD’s Blade Battery technology has built a strong reputation for durability and safety. The newer Atto 3 Evo version also improves charging performance and range compared to the original model.

The BYD Dolphin probably deserves to be in this conversation even more than the Atto 3 because it targets the same compact hatchback space as the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo much more directly. It focuses on practicality, decent range and strong standard equipment.

Compared with the ID.3 Neo, the Dolphin feels slightly more comfort oriented and less refined dynamically, but it also tends to compete with Volkswagen by offering generous equipment levels. BYD’s Blade Battery technology is another major selling point, especially for buyers prioritising battery durability and safety.

In Europe, the larger battery versions offer up to 427 km WLTP range, while newer updates have also improved charging performance compared with earlier models. One reason the MG4 has done well in Europe is that it doesn’t try too hard to feel futuristic or overly complicated. It’s simple to drive, reasonably efficient and available with several battery options depending on budget and range needs. The chassis tuning is also surprisingly good for the price point, with several European reviewers describing it as one of the better-driving affordable EV hatchbacks currently on sale.

Wait, I almost forgot there’s another weird thing here: the MG4 shares its name with the MG4 Urban, which is actually a completely different car built on a different platform. Leapmotor B05

The Leapmotor B05 is one of the newer arrivals in Europe and is positioned very directly at mainstream hatchback buyers. In simple terms, this is Leapmotor’s attempt at building an affordable electric hatchback for Europe without making it feel overly stripped back. Early impressions suggest the B05 focuses heavily on interior technology and value for money, although it lacks the proven track record of legacy brands like Volkswagen.

It is not aiming to be the fastest, most futuristic, or cheapest option, but a stable all-rounder for everyday use.

However, the competitive landscape has changed quite quickly. Chinese manufacturers are now covering almost every angle of this segment. Some are going after value first, like the MG4 EV, BYD Dolphin and Leapmotor B05. These cars make the most sense for buyers who prioritise price and equipment over brand legacy.
