China’s battery makers are pushing charging times further, and Sunwoda has now joined the race with a new 15C flash charging battery system that can reportedly take an EV from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.
According to the company, at room temperature, the battery can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes, while a one-minute charging session can add up to 100 km of driving range. The figures put Sunwoda’s latest battery in the same territory as BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, which also claims a 10% to 97% charging time of nine minutes when paired with the company’s latest 1,500 kW flash charger. BYD has already built 10,000 of its flash charging stations in China and is targeting 20,000 by the end of 2026.
Sunwoda says the battery can support more than 700 km of driving range. Low temperatures remain a challenge, but the company claims that even at −20°C, the battery can charge from 10% to 97% in 15 minutes. The system uses an energy density of 460 Wh/L at cell level and is designed to maintain more than 90% of its range performance in those conditions. Durability is also part of the package: the system is designed to meet a 10-year or 300,000 km warranty requirement and allows unlimited ultra-fast charging for privately operated vehicles during that period.
The company is also adding software to the battery system. Its smart cells, energy domain controller and cloud platform can monitor more than 20 types of potential faults, with Sunwoda claiming that some problems can be detected two to ten days before they become critical.
The charging hardware will be just as important as the battery itself. Sunwoda has introduced an open platform combining flash charging, energy storage, solar power and high-power liquid-cooled chargers, with plans for 10,000 megawatt charging stations by the end of 2027. Sunwoda has not yet announced which production EVs will use the new battery or when series production will begin. That detail will matter because ultra-fast charging only makes a real difference when the battery, vehicle electronics and charging network are designed to work together.
The move comes as Chinese battery suppliers continue to push charging technology alongside improvements in energy density, battery chemistry and durability.
