CATL, the world’s largest battery maker, is setting its sights on the open ocean. According to CnEVPost, the company expects to have pure-electric vessels capable of long-distance ocean voyages within three years. While CATL already leads the marine battery market for inland and coastal waters, supplying nearly 900 vessels and holding roughly 40 percent of the global market, moving into deep-sea shipping represents a major new step.

Su Yiyi, head of CATL’s marine division, told the press in Shanghai that the company is confident about this timeline. “In the next few years, we aim to see pure-electric vessels navigating the open seas,” Su said, emphasizing CATL’s push to make low-emission maritime travel a reality.

From Rivers and Coasts to the Ocean

CATL started exploring marine electrification in 2017 and launched a dedicated marine subsidiary in 2022. So far, the company has focused on inland rivers, lakes, and coastal operations. A notable milestone was the launch of the “Yujian 77” in July 2025, China’s first pure-electric tourist ship. The vessel showcased quiet, zero-emission operation while providing a high-quality experience for passengers.

Beyond ships, CATL is also experimenting with more futuristic applications, like collaborating with startups on waterborne vertiports for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. This highlights how versatile the company’s battery technology can be.

Technology and Market Leadership

CATL’s expertise in automotive batteries translates naturally into marine applications. Its fifth-generation LFP batteries are more energy-dense and durable than earlier generations, making them well-suited to the unique demands of ocean-going vessels. Already a leader in EV batteries worldwide, with 355.2 GWh installed from January to October 2025, CATL is now looking to replicate that success on the water.

By applying its battery know-how, CATL aims to offer safe, reliable, and high-performance energy solutions for the next generation of maritime transport, both near the coast and eventually on the open ocean.
