Great news for Volvo and MG: their XC40 and MG4 Electric are on the list of the top 10 best-selling EVs in Europe for 2023. The MG4 and Volvo XC40 are also the best-selling Chinese EVs in Europe and, in fact, the only Chinese EVs on the list, with BYD or NIO not even coming close to their numbers.
If you’re wondering why Volvo and MG are mentioned as Chinese brands, it’s because MG’s parent company since 2005 is SAIC Motor, the 7th largest car manufacturer in the world. Volvo, on the other hand, has been owned by Geely Auto since 2010, yet another Chinese car company.
The 10 Best-Selling EVs in Europe 2023
The leader on the list is Tesla, which is quite expected. A company that has led the way in terms of zero-carbon transportation innovation, Tesla is considered the pioneer of electric vehicles. Model Y and Model 3 top the list, with Volkswagen ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq iV in hot pursuit.
XC40 Recharge, made by Volvo, a car company renowned for the safety and reliability of its vehicles, holds the fifth place. The MG4 Electric is in seventh place, a fantastic success story for a brand that just a decade ago sold merely 782 cars in a whole year. Here’s the full top 10 list, where you can find the best-selling Chinese EVs in Europe among automotive giants like Volkswagen or Audi.

- Tesla Model 3
- Volkswagen ID.4
- Skoda Enyaq iV
- Volvo XC40 Recharge

The Volvo XC40 and the MG4 Electric
The Volvo XC40 Recharge is a fully electric SUV with a 79 kWh battery and an average energy consumption of 16.9 kWh. The owner of this car can expect a range of around 470 km. With a roomy interior and better build quality than Tesla, the XC40 Recharge is a great option if you’re considering buying an EV.
When it comes to MG and its MG4 Electric, we talk about one of the best stories in recent automotive history. As I said earlier, back in 2012 MG sold just 782 vehicles for the entire year. The revival started the very next year, with the MG3 model rolling out to the market and earning MG third place for ‘Best Manufacturer of the Year.’ The MG4 Electric follows the same footprint that started with MG3, reviving MG’s reputation among buyers: high quality and reasonable pricing. MG4 Electric is a better buy than anything VW has to offer.
