Exciting news is emerging from China, particularly for those acquainted with the smartphone industry. Meizu, a smartphone manufacturer that used to sell its products here in Europe, but it’s now focused almost entirely on China, now it’s launching its own EV, the Meizu DreamCar MX, in the first quarter of 2024.
About Meizu
Meizu is a smartphone manufacturer focused on its domestic market. It ventured into international markets in 2015, following the path of other Chinese smartphone giants like Xiaomi. Despite its efforts, Meizu phones were perceived as average-quality products that failed to gain a foothold in non-Chinese markets.
Geely acquired Meizu last year
Every new electric car is based on advanced software. Smartphones are useless without their operating systems, too, so the two worlds are blending slowly together. Phone companies have vast experience and are in a unique position to develop software for controlling cars. Taking control over phone companies is a shortcut for car companies towards faster software development.
Meizu already has its Flyme For Car operating system, with a number of patents owned. That said, it’s natural for Geely to acquire Meizu and own Meizu patents and expertise. And now, under Geely’s umbrella, Meizu is about to release Meizu DreamCar MX, its own EV.
Meizu DreamCar MX
It was obvious from the acquisition itself that future Geely EVs are going to run on Meizu’s software. But it’s now clear that the deal went both ways, and Meizu is going to produce its own cars.
The DreamCar MX will be revealed in Q1 2024, and it will run on Meizu’s Flyme software. Interestingly, the company will leave details like paint and interior color for the Meizu community to pick. That’s pretty much what we know so far.
