Mazda’s attempt at an electric car was really unconventional. The MX-30 arrived in Europe in 2020 with a 35.5 kWh battery and a WLTP range of around 200 km (124 miles). Mazda deliberately chose a relatively small battery, arguing that it was enough for many daily journeys while reducing the environmental impact of battery production. In practice, however, the limited range made the MX-30 difficult to use as an everyday car beyond urban and shorter-distance driving.
The MX-30 never established itself as a strong electric alternative in Europe. Mazda later added the MX-30 R-EV, using a small rotary engine as a range extender, but that also failed to turn the model into a significant player. The R-EV was later discontinued, leaving Mazda without a competitive mainstream EV replacement based on its own technology.
Mazda therefore took a different route with its next electric cars. Rather than wait for its own dedicated EV platform, the company turned to Changan, its long-running Chinese joint venture partner. The result is the Mazda6e saloon and the Mazda CX-6e SUV, both developed around Changan technology and produced in China. That gives Mazda two electric models for Europe without having to wait for its own EV architecture, which has itself been delayed. Mazda’s first model based on its proprietary Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture is now expected no earlier than 2029.
Mazda6e: The Electric Saloon
The Mazda6e arrived in Europe in 2025. It is a five-door electric saloon with rear-wheel drive and a 190 kW (258 PS) electric motor. When the 6e was launched, Mazda offered two battery options. The standard version used a 68.8 kWh LFP battery with up to 479 km (298 miles) of WLTP range, while the European Long Range version used an 80 kWh NMC battery and could reach 552 km (343 miles). For the 2027 model year, Mazda is simplifying the range. Both earlier batteries are being replaced by a 78 kWh LFP pack, with a claimed WLTP range of up to 560 km (348 miles). DC charging also improves to as much as 200 kW, with Mazda quoting 10 to 80 percent in 24 minutes. The electric motor still produces 190 kW (258 PS), but Mazda has made several changes to the way the car drives. The 2027 version reaches 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, while the suspension, steering, throttle response and regenerative braking have all been revised. Mazda has also added a Pet Comfort Mode for owners travelling with animals. The 6e remains a relatively practical car for its size. There is 337 litres of boot space up to the parcel shelf, or 466 litres when loaded to the roof, while folding the rear seats increases the available space to 1,074 litres. There is also a 72 litre frunk under the bonnet.
The Mazda6e also performed well in Euro NCAP’s 2025 safety tests, scoring 93% for adult occupant protection and 93% for child occupant protection. In Germany, the 2027 Mazda6e starts at €47,490 in Takumi specification. Prices vary considerably between European markets, however, with the same 78 kWh LFP version starting at €40,990 in the Netherlands. The 2026 version is still available, and depending on the market, it can be purchased for as little as €33,500, including the trade in incentives available in those markets.
Mazda CX-6e: The SUV Alternative
The CX-6e is the second model in Mazda’s new electric lineup and uses the same basic technical package as the 6e. European deliveries started in summer 2026. Unlike the earlier 6e range, the CX-6e is offered in Europe with just one battery and one drivetrain. It uses a 78 kWh LFP battery, a 190 kW (258 PS) rear-mounted electric motor and 290 Nm of torque. The car reaches 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

Range depends on the wheels. Mazda quotes up to 484 km (301 miles) with 19-inch wheels and 468 km (291 miles) with 21-inch wheels. Maximum DC charging is rated at 195 kW, with a claimed 10 to 80 percent charging time of 24 minutes. The CX-6e is 4.85 metres long and has a 468 litre boot. Folding the rear seats increases this to 1,434 litres. There is also storage under the front bonnet, with capacity of around 80 litres depending on specification. The SUV can tow up to 1,500 kg with a braked trailer, which gives it an advantage over the 6e for buyers who need more practical carrying capability.

The CX-6e starts at €49,990 in Germany, putting it €2,500 above the 2027 Mazda6e in its entry specification. Prices vary across Europe, however. In Croatia, for example, the CX-6e is listed from €45,850, while Mazda is currently offering a €5,000 incentive that reduces the price to €40,850.
Who Actually Builds These Cars?
The Mazda6e is the European version of the Chinese EZ-6, while the CX-6e is the European version of the EZ-60. Both use Changan’s EPA platform, and both are manufactured by Changan Mazda joint venture in China. The same basic architecture is also used by models from Changan’s Deepal brand.

The underlying drivetrain technology comes from Changan, while Mazda’s contribution is more visible in the areas that customers experience directly. The exterior design carries Mazda’s current design language, while the suspension, steering, brakes and other driving characteristics have been adjusted for the European market. Mazda has also changed equipment, software and some of the interior presentation compared with the Chinese-market versions. This approach allows Mazda to keep some of the characteristics associated with its cars without taking on the full cost and development time of creating a completely new EV architecture.
Changan benefits from the partnership by increasing production volumes for its EV technology while gaining more experience with the European market. For Mazda, the partnership helps fill a clear gap in its lineup: after the MX-30 failed to establish itself as a competitive mainstream EV, the company was left without a modern electric model that could compete across the European market. Instead of waiting for its own EV architecture, Mazda can now sell two modern electric models in Europe while continuing to work on its own platform.
Why Mazda Is Using the Same Battery in Both Cars
The 2027 Mazda6e and CX-6e use the same 78 kWh LFP battery, and there is an obvious practical reason for doing this. Using one battery configuration across both cars should make production and sourcing simpler than maintaining separate battery programmes. The 6e and CX-6e already share the same basic electric architecture, so using the same battery also makes sense from a manufacturing point of view.
For Mazda, the change also removes one of the less convincing parts of the original 6e range. The previous 80 kWh NMC version offered more range, but its charging performance was considerably lower than that of the LFP version. The new 78 kWh battery gives Mazda one specification with a longer range than the original standard 6e and much faster peak charging than the old Long Range model. The same battery also makes the technical relationship between the 6e and CX-6e easier to see. The cars have different body shapes and different range figures, but much of the hardware underneath is shared.
