Electric vehicles were once expected to revolutionize the car market. However, today, they are still far from dominating the market for various reasons. The biggest reason is the price: according to a study by Jato Dynamics, the average selling price of an EV in Europe is a staggering €65,000. However, the tide seems to be changing, as the Dongfeng Nammi Box, a small and affordable EV, is set to arrive in Europe this year.
What is Dongfeng Nammi Box?
Let’s start with the bigger picture. Dongfeng Motor is a Chinese state-owned company (many companies in China are state-owned) and a member of the “Big Four” state-owned car manufacturers in the country. Like other major Chinese EV brands, Dongfeng views Europe as the most lucrative market after the domestic one. Unfortunately, the initial strategy of Chinese manufacturers in Europe was a fiasco. Offering high-end models at similarly high prices resulted in just a few hundred EVs sold per year.

In response, Dongfeng Motor decided to change its strategy with the sub-brand Nammi, which focuses on small electric cars. The Dongfeng Nammi Box, the first in this line, is similar in size to the Citroën e-C3.
According to the official Dongfeng Nammi Box webpage, the car has a length of 4.02 m, a width of 1.87 m, and a height of 1.57 m. With a wheelbase of 2.6 m, this car is not small at all. The trunk volume is 326 liters, expanding to 946 liters with the rear seats folded down.
The battery has 42.3 kWh capacity and a range of 310 km (WLTP). The motor has 70 kW (95 hp) and enables top speed of 140 km/h. According to this parameters, this might be the ideal city EV: it offers enough interior space for the entire family, and the range is more than enough for a daily commute. So what’s the price?
The Dongfeng Nammi Box is coming to Europe at the end of the summer of 2024 in Switzerland and Norway. The rest of the Europe should follow next year. The base price in Switzerland is going to be 21,990 fr (€23,000), and 189,000 kr (€16,000) in Norway. Looking forward to more affordable EVs!
