The Corsa GSE is now open for order at €39,900, and it’s quicker than any production Opel that’s come before it, electric or otherwise. 0 to 100 km/h takes 5.5 seconds, which beats even the Nürburgring Edition Corsa OPC from 2010, a car that needed a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine to get there.

What €39,900 Gets You

The Corsa GSE packs 207 kW (281 hp) and 345 Nm of torque into a car that Opel is very deliberately calling “Grand Sport Electric,” a nod to the GSi and OPC hot hatches that came before it. Power goes exclusively to the front wheels, split across three drive modes: Sport unlocks the full 207 kW, Normal caps things at 170 kW with the same torque, and Eco limits output to 140 kW and 300 Nm with a 150 km/h top speed. In Sport, the car will do 180 km/h flat out, but 50 km/h down on that old OPC despite being dramatically quicker off the line.

Where the Power Comes From

None of the hardware under the Corsa GSE is bespoke because the motor, inverter, battery and wiring harness are lifted straight from the Mokka GSE, the crossover sibling that won a Golden Steering Wheel award in its category last year, according to Opel’s own launch announcement. Sharing that hardware cuts development costs, and it also means the componentry has already proven itself in a car with a similar power output. Opel has retuned the thermal management for the Corsa’s higher continuous loads, but the battery capacity, 54 kWh gross, is identical to the standard electric Corsa.

Here’s an interesting engineering part: a Torsen limited-slip differential. If you put 207 kW through two front wheels without one, you’d expect wheelspin, torque steer and a traction control system working overtime through every corner, but electrive.com’s first drive on a closed handling course near Vienna found almost none of that. The differential sends power to the wheel with grip rather than the unloaded one, and the reviewer described having to deliberately provoke the car to unsettle it, cleanly pulling out of corners on the outer front wheel with no drama. A lowered sports chassis, Alcon four-piston brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres on 18-inch wheels round out the mechanical package.

The Weak Point Is Charging

100 kW peak DC charging is the Achilles heel of this car. It gets you from 20 to 80% in 27 minutes, which works out to an average charging speed of roughly 79 kW, quite unremarkable compared even with cheaper rivals. electrive’s tester recorded 19.8 kWh/100 km of real-world consumption while driving briskly, translating to a real-world range closer to 260 km rather than the WLTP-quoted 354 to 374 km. Push the car the way it’s designed to be pushed and you’re looking at a charging stop every two hours or so, for the better part of half an hour each time.

The other gap is related to software, because the Corsa GSE has no true one-pedal driving. Regenerative braking is limited to two fixed settings, normal or increased via the B gear, with no paddle-adjustable gradation of the kind that’s now standard on EVs costing significantly less. There’s no auto-hold function either, at least not in the test car. For a car built around the interplay between regenerative and friction braking, that’s a strange omission, and one that will matter more in city traffic than on the country roads where the Corsa GSE is otherwise happiest.

Its Direct Rival Is Basically the Same Car

The Corsa GSE’s closest competitor is built on the same line. The Peugeot e-208 GTi shares identical power, torque, acceleration and charging figures, right down to the 27-minute charge time, because it’s mechanically the same car under different sheet metal. Peugeot charges €44,900 for the privilege, roughly €5,000 more than the Opel for a spec sheet that reads identically on paper.

VW’s ID. Polo GTI is noticeably less powerful, over a second slower to 100 km/h, and with a slightly bigger 52 kWh usable battery, range, and a price that undercuts the Corsa GSE.

This Might Be the Last GSE of Its Kind

The current Corsa runs on Stellantis’s ageing e-CMP platform, and it’s on its way out. The next-generation Corsa has been delayed to 2028, will be sold exclusively as a battery-electric car on the newer STLA Small platform, and is expected to start at around €25,000, comfortably inside the range of what Europe’s cheapest EVs currently cost. Whether that future Corsa gets its own GSE version is still unclear.

That makes the current Corsa GSE feel less like the start of something and more like a proper send-off: the fastest, most focused version of a platform that’s already being phased out, arriving right as the regular Corsa Electric prepares to hand things over to a cheaper, longer-range successor. If you want the last word on the outgoing generation, this is it. Among the current crop of electric hatchbacks on sale in Europe, few are trying to do what this one does at this price.

The Bottom Line

The Opel Corsa GSE does the hot hatch job properly. It’s seriously quick, the limited-slip differential and Alcon brakes are the real deal rather than badge-engineering, and at €39,900 it undercuts its closest sibling by a meaningful margin. The charging speed and the missing one-pedal mode are real weaknesses in 2026, and anyone cross-shopping it against a VW ID. Polo GTI should weigh those against the extra performance on offer. But for anyone who wants the most entertaining Opel currently on sale, and doesn’t mind planning charging stops around a 100 kW limit, this is exactly that.
