The plant’s layout was deliberately designed with spare capacity built in, and it’s already being used. BMW has confirmed that production of the iX4, a coupe styled electric SUV and the second confirmed model to come out of Debrecen, is set to begin there in November 2026, sharing the same lines and workforce as the iX3 from day one. An iX3 40 xDrive variant and an M Performance version are also widely expected to follow, extending the range further.
BMW is also building the same battery cells it uses in these cars on site in Debrecen, making it the first plant in the network to produce the company’s sixth generation high voltage batteries locally rather than shipping them in from elsewhere.
