Allego UK charging investment

Dutch charging company Allego is putting €100 million into the UK, aiming to install up to 1,400 new ultra-fast charging points by 2030. The plan, announced on 30 July 2026 and backed by infrastructure investor Meridiam, targets motorways, busy A-roads, and dense urban areas, with London named as a particular priority.

Allego isn’t planning to build all of this alone: the company works with retailers, hospitality businesses, and landowners, and it takes care of the financing, construction, ownership, and day to day operation of the chargers itself. In return, the site owner gets a long term lease payment without having to manage any of the equipment. Allego already runs this same setup elsewhere in Europe, including with IKEA in Belgium, REWE in Germany, and Burger King in France.

How many chargers does Allego operate?
Allego owns and operates more than 35,000 charging points across around 16 European countries, with roaming access to roughly 950,000 charge points across Europe and the UK through partner networks.

The timing lines up with a broader pickup in UK charger installations. According to Zapmap, the UK added 3,028 new chargers in the first quarter of 2026 alone, a big improvement after only 14,316 were added across all of 2025, down from close to 25,000 the year before that. As of June 2026, Zapmap counted more than 28,000 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers already running in the UK, and Allego’s rollout would add to that total over the next few years. Separately, a report from analyst firm LCP Delta estimated that EV charging could add £15.5 billion to the UK economy over the next decade, provided government policy support continues.

Who is Allego

Allego is based in Arnhem in the Netherlands and was founded in 2013 as a spin-off from Dutch grid operator Alliander. French infrastructure investor Meridiam took a stake in the company in 2018 and has been its main backer since. Allego briefly traded on the New York Stock Exchange between 2022 and 2024 after merging with a listed acquisition company, but Meridiam bought out the remaining public shares and took Allego private again in August 2024, and it remains the majority owner today.

Who owns Allego?
Allego is majority owned by French infrastructure investor Meridiam, which took Allego private again in August 2024 after briefly trading on the New York Stock Exchange between 2022 and 2024.

The company runs more than 35,000 of its own charging points across around 16 European countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Portugal, and the UK, where it has operated since 2017. Through roaming agreements with other networks, Allego’s app and charging card also give access to roughly 950,000 charge points across Europe and the UK in total, though the bulk of that is other companies’ infrastructure rather than Allego’s own. The company employs around 200 people. Steven Salo has led Allego as chief executive since February 2025, after moving up from the role of chief financial officer, which he’d held since mid-2024.

On UK market share specifically, hard numbers are difficult to pin down since none of the operators publish official percentages. For a sense of scale though, Ionity currently runs about a third of all public ultra-rapid chargers above 350kW in the UK, so Allego’s 1,400 new sites would still leave it some way off that kind of position, even once the rollout is complete.
