While the Chinese EV market is massive, with nearly 100 EV manufacturers, fierce competition prevails among them. Slashing prices is one strategy to secure a larger market share, but finding additional markets to sell their cars is another. Aiways, a Chinese EV manufacturer, has entered the European market with two models: the Aiways U5, an SUV comparable to the Hyundai Kona, MG ZS, and BYD Atto 3, and the Aiways U6, an SUV-Coupe. It’s no surprise that both models are SUV-styled, as SUVs are selling like hotcakes nowadays.
Aiways has streamlined the range, offering two trim levels for the Aiways U5 and just one for the Aiways U6. Both models come packed with equipment, making them suitable for the majority of buyers.
The Aiways U5 features
The Aiways U5 is well-equipped, boasting electrically adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Parking Assist, 6 airbags, and a plethora of safety features.
There’s only one drivetrain, but it should be more than adequate for the majority of potential buyers. The battery pack has a capacity of 63 kWh and powers a single 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor. Aiways U5 can achieve 400 km (WLTP) of range, while the battery charges from 20-80% in just 35 minutes. The battery pack comprises 24 modules with high energy density. The modules are supplied by renowned supplier CATL, whereas the battery and the battery electronics have been developed in-house.
The price is somewhat surprising, starting at over 40,000 euros in most European countries. As a new player in the field, Aiways is certainly not shy about pricing its vehicles at a level comparable to European brands.
