MG isn’t just doing cheap and cheerful anymore. From July 2026, the brand’s IM family arrives in Germany alongside France, Belgium and the Netherlands, a year after its original launch in the UK, Norway and Switzerland. The IM5 is a business-class electric saloon and the IM6 is its SUV sibling, and both share the same 800 volt platform, the same 100 kWh battery, and a genuinely serious spec sheet for the money. Here’s exactly what MG is bringing to German buyers, and what it costs.

MG IM5

The IM5 starts at €53,990 for the rear-wheel-drive Premium, rising to €58,990 for the dual-motor Premium AWD. Both use the same 100 kWh NMC battery pack, but the Premium AWD trades range for a genuinely serious amount of power, up to 751 PS, which puts it closer to a performance saloon than a typical family EV. Standard equipment on both trims includes all-wheel steering with a crab mode, a 26.3 inch combined instrument and infotainment display, a 20-speaker sound system, a panoramic glass roof and electrically adjustable seats. The options list is short: metallic paint for €790, and a lighter interior trim for €650 on the AWD version only.

MG IM6

The IM6 is the SUV version of the same platform, starting at €56,990 for the Premium and €60,990 for the Premium AWD, with an optional Drive Pack on the AWD version for €2,000, adding adaptive air suspension and 21 inch Sporty wheels in place of the standard 20 inch set. It shares the IM5’s cabin, motors and 100 kWh battery, but its taller SUV body costs it some efficiency and range in exchange for a considerably larger boot. Standard equipment mirrors the IM5’s generous list, plus a massage function on the driver’s seat that the saloon doesn’t get.

How They Compare

Both cars use identical drivetrains, so the choice really comes down to body style and what you do with the extra range. The IM5’s saloon shape is the more efficient of the two, stretching the same 100 kWh battery to 710 km WLTP against the IM6’s 625 km, and it’s cheaper by exactly €3,000 at every trim level. The IM6 answers with a genuinely useful 655 litre boot against the IM5’s 457 litres, plus a larger 32 litre frunk, which matters more if you actually carry things regularly than a saloon’s better drag coefficient does. Both battery packs use NMC chemistry rather than LFP, which trades some of LFP’s durability for higher energy density, a trade-off I’ve gone through in more detail in my LFP vs NMC battery explainer.

Pricing puts both cars well above MG’s usual territory. Oliver Rittierodt, MG Motor Deutschland’s Director of Sales, described the launch as opening a new chapter for the brand in Germany, and the positioning backs that up: MG is aiming this pair at buyers cross-shopping Tesla, Xpeng, Xiaomi and Zeekr rather than its own budget-friendly MG4 or MGS5. That’s a notable shift for a brand that’s built its recent German momentum on aggressive pricing, including the €6,000 EV-Bonus it’s used on cheaper models; it remains to be seen whether a similar bonus gets extended to the IM5 and IM6 once they’re actually in showrooms.

Both cars are currently built in China and imported to Europe, so they’re not affected by the production shift already underway elsewhere in MG’s range. I’ve covered MG’s plans to build cars in Galicia, Spain from 2028 in more detail separately, and that facility is expected to eventually handle higher-volume models rather than this premium pair.

FAQ

What’s the range of the MG IM5 and IM6?
The IM5 Premium reaches up to 710 km WLTP, dropping to 575 km on the more powerful Premium AWD. The IM6 Premium reaches up to 625 km WLTP, dropping to between 505 and 545 km on the Premium AWD depending on wheel size.

How fast do the IM5 and IM6 charge?
Both support up to 396 kW DC charging on their shared 800 volt architecture, enough for a 10 to 80% charge in around 17 minutes under ideal conditions.

Are the MG IM5 and IM6 the same car?
They share the same platform, 100 kWh battery, motors and interior technology, but the IM5 is a saloon and the IM6 is an SUV. The IM6 has a larger boot and frunk, while the IM5 gets more range from the same battery thanks to its more efficient body shape.

Is IM a separate brand from MG? No, at least not in Europe. IM (Intelligence in Motion) is SAIC’s premium electric sub-brand in China, but in Germany and the rest of Europe it’s sold as a model family under the MG badge rather than as a standalone brand.
