The Renault Trafic has been a mainstay of European commercial fleets since 1980, with more than 2.5 million units sold across three generations and a long run as one of the continent’s best selling light commercial vehicles. Renault is now replacing the current generation with an all new Trafic Van E-Tech Electric, unveiled at IAA Transportation in Hanover, and the company clearly believes it can outdo the strong track record that nameplate already built, judging by how much it’s changed under the skin.
This new Trafic isn’t actually a solo Renault project, as L’Argus first reported. It comes out of Flexis, a joint venture between Renault, Volvo Trucks and shipping giant CMA-CGM, and it rides on a dedicated FlexEVan skateboard platform shared with two siblings, the larger Estafette and the flatbed Goelette. That’s a very different story from the one most coverage of the Hanover reveal has been telling, and it matters, since it explains why this van looks nothing like the electric Trafic Renault already sells.
A big jump over the current electric Trafic
The existing electric Trafic, on sale since late 2023, was always a compromise. It borrowed a combustion platform that was never designed for batteries, with a 90 kW (122 hp) motor, a 52 kWh pack, and up to 294 km WLTP in the best case. The new Trafic E-Tech Electric throws that compromise out entirely. It gets a 150 kW (204 hp) motor with 345 Nm of torque, driving the rear wheels, and Renault claims more than 470 km WLTP on the launch battery, per Electric Cars Report’s coverage of the Hanover reveal, though that figure is still pending official homologation. In city driving, Renault says the claimed range can stretch to nearly 690 km, enough for up to five days of work without a recharge.

That launch battery is an 81 kWh NMC pack. A second, cheaper 60 kWh LFP option is coming later for buyers who mostly run urban routes and don’t need the extra range, rated at around 350 km WLTP. Why Renault is splitting the lineup between two different battery chemistries instead of offering just one size is exactly the kind of tradeoff I’ve gone through in my LFP vs NMC explainer. Both battery options sit within an 800V architecture, Renault’s first, which peaks at 240 kW on DC and can add up to 280 km of range in 20 minutes, or as much as 380 km if that charging session happens mostly in city driving.

At just 1.89 metres tall, the Trafic clears most underground parking barriers, and Renault built the whole thing around a rear mounted motor and a shortened front overhang, which brings the turning circle down to 10.3 metres, on par with a Clio. Cargo capacity tops out at 5.8 m³, enough for three Euro pallets, with a 53 cm load height and 1.30 metres of width between the wheel arches for easier conversions. A panel van version launches by the end of 2026, with chassis cab and crew cab variants following in 2027.
Two supercomputers instead of 80 control units
Renault is also calling this its first software defined vehicle, and the first LCV in Europe built that way. Eighty separate electronic control units get replaced with just two supercomputers, running CAR OS, an Android based system Renault developed with Google. That architecture is what enables the regular software updates, predictive maintenance and improved residual value Renault is promising, and it feeds directly into Renault Uptimize, a fleet uptime programme launching in 2027 that aims to cut downtime in half using connected data and AI, backed by 400 Renault Pro+ centres across Europe.
Made in France, alongside a broader manufacturing push
Renault is leaning hard on the idea that this van needs to work for businesses beyond straightforward deliveries. Vehicle to Load lets operators run power tools or equipment straight off the battery, and a planned electric power take off will let converters draw power for things like refrigeration units or ambulance equipment. Conversions themselves run through three tiers, starting with Renault’s own LCV plants at Maubeuge, Sandouville and Batilly, then its in house specialist Qstomize, and finally a wider network of 300 certified body converters across Europe.

The Trafic is built at Renault’s Sandouville plant using low carbon energy, and it isn’t actually replacing the diesel Trafic III there, because both will run in parallel for now. Renault says the electric version’s lifecycle carbon footprint comes in more than 45 percent lower than an equivalent diesel van, working out to about 33 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over a 200,000 km lifecycle against roughly 63 tonnes for diesel, and it estimates total cost of ownership up to 10 percent lower too. Sandouville isn’t the only French plant carrying this kind of weight for Renault right now. Renault’s newer electric models have been on a real roll lately, selling well, drawing strong customer satisfaction scores, and pulling in rising demand across the continent. The group recently hit a million EVs built in France milestone, and the Trafic joins that momentum.
Where the Trafic actually lands against rivals in the delivery van segment is its own question, and I’ve mapped out the best electric city delivery vans in Europe separately for that comparison. Honestly, the who built it angle is the part I keep coming back to here. A French carmaker, a Swedish truck maker and a global shipping company don’t usually end up building a van together. If Renault’s other new EVs are any guide, I’d bet this one has a real shot at matching the run the diesel Trafic put together over four decades. Whether Estafette and Goelette, the Trafic’s siblings on that same FlexEVan platform, get anywhere near this much attention when their turn comes is a different story though.
