Nio is one of China’s most ambitious electric vehicle makers, known for blending cutting-edge tech with premium design. Their large three-row SUV, the ES8, has just launched in China in its latest generation. In Europe, this same model is sold as the EL8, where it competes with high-end electric SUVs like the Tesla Model X and Mercedes EQE SUV. Nio’s strategy is clear: build a luxurious, powerful, and family-friendly EV that can keep pace with rapidly improving battery technology.

A Fresh Take on the ES8

The new ES8 comes with a sharper, more modern look and a redesigned interior built around comfort and smart tech. It rides on Nio’s latest NT2.0 platform, bringing improvements in performance, efficiency, and driver-assist features. Inside, a massive digital dashboard, premium materials, and flexible seating for up to seven passengers make the ES8 a true family flagship.

Power and Battery Options

Under the skin, the ES8 packs dual motors with a combined output of 480 kW (643 hp), delivering smooth all-wheel-drive performance and 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration in around 4.1 seconds. Buyers in China can choose between a 75 kWh or 100 kWh battery pack, offering ranges of roughly 465 km and 630 km respectively (CLTC standard). Nio also supports its signature Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, allowing drivers to swap batteries in minutes at dedicated Nio Power stations or lease the battery instead of buying it outright.

Pricing and Market Reception

In China, the new ES8 starts at around €57,200 (converted from RMB), including the battery. Customers choosing the BaaS subscription can lower the upfront price to roughly €44,000, with a monthly fee for battery use. The launch has been a major success: Nio reported that orders placed on the first day already face up to a six-month wait, highlighting strong demand in China’s increasingly competitive premium EV market.

Connection to Europe: Meet the EL8

While this ES8 is aimed at Chinese buyers, European EV fans already know it as the Nio EL8. The EL8 offers many of the same features—dual motors, spacious three-row seating, and Nio’s battery-swap capability where available. European versions differ slightly in battery options and range due to local regulations and WLTP standards, but the DNA is unmistakably ES8.
