MG registered 4,960 cars in the UK in August 2026, up 93.5% on the same month last year, enough to push the brand into third place among all car makers for the first time, behind only Volkswagen and Ford, according to registration data compiled by Best Selling Cars Blog.

That single month caps a climb that’s been building all year. MG sat 13th in the first quarter, slipped slightly year on year at that point, then turned sharply upward: 8th place by June with a record first half, 6th in July, and now 3rd in August with a 5.3% market share.

Electrification is doing most of the work behind that curve. 91% of MG’s UK sales now come from an electrified powertrain, spanning hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric models, and the MG HS Plug-in Hybrid has become one of the brand’s standout performers, up 67% year on year and sitting as the UK’s fifth best selling PHEV. MG also holds onto second place among the UK’s hybrid manufacturers overall, with both the ZS and HS ranking in the country’s top five hybrid sellers year to date.

Private retail sales are up 24% year to date, more than double the wider market’s 11% growth, and that alone has lifted MG into sixth place on the UK’s private retail sales charts specifically. MG has been explicit that it isn’t chasing a premium repositioning to keep this going. Geraint Isaac, who leads MG UK’s fleet sales operation, told Fleet News the brand wants to stay known as a value brand while improving quality, rather than follow rivals upmarket. It’s a strategy I’ve written about from the product side too. The MG4 Urban built its case as a second family car on exactly this combination, useful rather than flashy, priced to be an easy yes.

MG’s UK run fits into a bigger picture across Europe. The brand remains the continent’s largest Chinese owned marque by sales, and in February it became the first Chinese brand to pass one million combined EU and UK sales, after moving over 300,000 units across both markets in 2025 alone, up nearly 30% year on year. I looked at which Chinese brands are actually built to last in Europe in Chinese EV brands in Europe: who’s staying and who’s already gone.

Whether third place holds through the rest of the year is a separate question. Ford’s climb back to second in August was its best ranking since February, and Volkswagen still leads by a wide margin. What’s harder to dismiss is the run behind MG’s rise: April, May and June were all record months in their own right, and August was MG’s best performance of the year so far.
