Changan Deepal S05

The Changan Deepal S05 is a compact electric SUV developed by Changan, one of China's largest automakers, under its dedicated EV brand, Deepal. It's built on Changan's EPA1 electric platform, the same architecture underpinning the larger S07, and designed with European buyers in mind. On paper, the S05 ticks the same boxes almost every Chinese EV in this class ticks at this point: practical packaging, strong range for the money, and a tech list that reads better than most European rivals charging thousands more for less.

Design and Size

The Deepal S05 sits below the S07 in Changan's European lineup, with a focus on urban versatility. It measures around 4,598 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, and 1,600 mm tall, with a 2,880 mm wheelbase, giving it proportions close to compact SUVs like the Volkswagen ID.4 or BYD Atto 3.

Practicality is where the S05 quietly stands out. There's a 492 litre boot that grows to 1,250 litres with the rear seats folded, plus a front trunk of 159 litres on the RWD versions (152 litres on the AWD Max), one of the largest frunks in the class. Style-wise, the exterior follows a clean, modern design language with a closed front grille, slim LED lighting, and flush door handles. Frameless doors and a sloping roofline help give it a refined look without compromising on that practicality. Inside, the cabin features a large 15.4-inch central touchscreen and an augmented-reality head-up display in place of traditional dials. It's become the default EV interior formula at this point, and I find it harder every year to tell one brand's cabin apart from another's on the continent: a wheel, one big screen where everything lives, and empty space around it. The S05 doesn't really break from that template, but the generous glass area at least keeps the cabin feeling open rather than just minimal for minimalism's sake.

Battery, Power and Range

The Deepal S05 BEV is powered by a 68.8 kWh LFP battery. Buyers can choose between a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup, depending on the market, and top speed is capped at 180 km/h across the board.

The RWD version produces around 200 kW (272 hp) and 290 Nm of torque, delivering an estimated WLTP range of up to 485 km, while the AWD version increases output to around 320 kW (435 hp) and 502 Nm, with a range closer to 445 km.

Charging performance is competitive within the compact SUV class. On a DC fast charger rated up to 200 kW, the S05 goes from 30% to 80% in about 15 minutes, or roughly 23 minutes for a fuller 10% to 80% top-up. AC home charging supports up to 11 kW, enabling a full recharge overnight.

Trim Levels

The Deepal S05 is offered in several trims across Europe, with different naming and specifications depending on the country. Norway, one of Deepal's first European markets, uses local trim names and standardises AWD for all versions. The UK is the outlier on the other end: Changan's current UK price list offers just one specification, RWD only, badged simply as "Deepal S05" with a single high level of standard equipment. An AWD version was floated at launch, but it isn't in Changan's current UK price list, so it isn't available to order there yet.

The Changan Deepal S05 competes in one of Europe’s most crowded EV segments: the compact SUV class. Its rivals include models like the Volkswagen ID.4, BYD Atto 3, Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Smart #3.

The S05 doesn't really try to stand out on any single spec, and that's sort of the point. It's not the longest-range option in the class, nor the fastest, but the combination of range, performance and price undercuts most of what Volkswagen, Kia and Hyundai charge for similar hardware. If you want a new-generation EV without paying the premium-brand tax, that's where the S05 makes its case.
