Chinese EV makers are all trying different strategies to break into Europe. BYD has basically flooded the market with more models than you can count on both hands (and soon, probably feet too). Leapmotor’s B and C series go way under the prices of European competitors, while MG is leaning on its familiar name. On the other end of the price spectrum, you’ve got Hongqi, a luxury Chinese brand aiming to throw down the gauntlet at Mercedes, Audi, and BMW.

Hongqi isn’t new to building premium cars. It’s actually one of China’s oldest automakers, originally known for making state limousines before moving into modern EVs. In their home market, they sell hundreds of thousands of electric cars, but in Europe they’ve sold fewer than a thousand this year. Competing with Europe’s premium brands is anything but easy. Still, Hongqi is thinking long-term in Europe, with a goal of being present in 25 countries by 2028. And one of the models it hopes will break the ice is the Hongqi EHS7.

Hongqi EHS7

The EHS7 is a full-size electric SUV for global markets, including Europe. It’s aimed at people who want more than a small city EV, but don’t necessarily need (or want to pay for) ultra‑luxury marques. From Hongqi’s perspective, ideal buyers are likely to be people interesting in EVs but seeking a roomy, premium-feel SUV without paying premium‑brand prices. And of course buyers in European markets where incentives or favorable taxes make a large Chinese EV SUV attractive financially.

Dimensions, Practicality and Safety

With dimensions around 4.925 m (length) × 1.950 m (width) and a 3.0 m wheelbase, the EHS7 is a fairly large five‑door, five-seat SUV, and that size translates directly into interior space. The cabin feels spacious and well organised, with a simple layout that’s easy to get used to. The impression is generally one of quiet comfort rather than anything flashy. Rear-seat space is generous, and long journeys should feel relaxed.

The Hongqi EHS7 comes with a large 643‑litre boot, and that expands to 1,709 liters when the seats are folded, giving plenty of room for luggage or cargo. On top of that, it also features a 62‑litre front trunk.

Safety-wise, the EHS7 has achieved a 5‑star Euro NCAP rating, scoring particularly high in adult-occupant protection (93 %) and child-occupant safety (85 %). It also received positive marks for pedestrian protection and active safety systems.

Trims, Range and Performance

The Hongqi EHS7 comes with two battery options: 85 kWh and 111 kWh, paired with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive depending on the trim. Each European market has its own trim naming and configuration which makes shipping and inventory management across different countries a head-scratching experience.

According to the WLTP standard, the 85 kWh battery provides up to 475 km of range, while the 111 kWh battery can reach roughly 600  km. In real-world conditions the 111 kWh battery achieves a more modest 455 km. Acceleration and performance vary depending on the drivetrain, with dual-motor AWD versions offering more traction and quicker responses for highway driving. Charging supports AC up to 11 kW and DC fast charging up to 250  kW.

Competitors

The EHS7 competes in a segment filled with established electric SUVs, such as the Audi Q6 e-tron, BMW iX5, and BYD Tang. Its appeal lies in the combination of spaciousness, comfort, and relatively competitive pricing for a large SUV. On the other hand, some reviews also highlight negative aspects of the car, with an emphasis on the software.

Pricing and Availability in Europe

The EHS7 is available in several European countries, with prices varying due to local taxes, registration fees, and EV incentives. The trim selection differs by country, too.
