The world of electric vehicles (EVs) is moving fast, and Zeekr, a premium EV brand under the Geely Group, just raised the bar with its Golden Battery. This cutting-edge lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery is breaking records with its lightning-fast charging speeds.

So, What’s So Special About the Golden Battery?

Fast charging is one of the biggest concerns for EV drivers, and Zeekr seems to have cracked the code. The Golden Battery uses prismatic LFP cells that allow for super-efficient energy transfer. According to Zeekr, this battery can go from 10% to 80% charge in just 10.5 minutes—but only if you’re plugged into a high-powered charger. That’s nearly twice as fast as most EVs on the market today!

The secret behind this speed is the battery’s 5.5C charging rate. In simple terms, that means it can charge at 5.5 times its total capacity per hour. For perspective, a 1C rate would take a full hour to charge a battery, while a 2C rate cuts that to 30 minutes. Zeekr’s high C-rate puts it in a league of its own.

Real-World Charging Results: Mind-Blowing Speeds

The Golden Battery was recently put to the test in China inside the Zeekr 7X SUV, which houses a 75-kilowatt-hour (kWh) LFP battery pack. The results? Nothing short of impressive:

  • 0-70% charge: Just 10 minutes
  • 10-80% charge: A mere 9 minutes and 45 seconds
  • 0-100% charge: Slightly over 22 minutes

At its peak, the charging rate hit 460 kW, holding steady around 400 kW for most of the session. The best part? Charging the 7X from empty to nearly full cost just $13 (93 yuan) while adding 600 km (371 miles) of range. That’s incredibly close to the time and cost of refueling a gasoline vehicle!

How Does This Compare to Other EV Batteries?

Traditional nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries tend to charge quickly at the start but slow down significantly as they fill up. LFP batteries, on the other hand, charge at a more consistent rate, making them faster overall.

Another key metric is how much range you gain per minute of charging. The Zeekr 7X added about 21 miles per minute, or a staggering 1270 miles per hour. That kind of speed puts EV charging on par with, if not better than, refueling a gas car.

Zeekr’s Secret Sauce: Vertical Integration

Zeekr takes a Tesla-like approach, handling everything in-house—from battery development to vehicle design and engineering. This level of control allows them to fine-tune performance and efficiency across their entire lineup.

The company also has its own fast-charging network. It’s not as widespread as Tesla’s Supercharger network yet, but the speeds they’re delivering are unprecedented, at least outside of China. With strong government support for EVs, Zeekr is in a prime position to redefine fast charging as we know it.

The Future of EV Charging: What’s Next?

Zeekr’s Golden Battery is proof that EV charging is evolving faster than ever. As battery technology and charging infrastructure continue to improve, ultra-fast charging could soon become the standard.

For drivers, this means shorter pit stops, more convenience, and a seamless EV experience. With companies like Zeekr leading the charge, the days of long waits at charging stations might soon be a thing of the past.

The race for the fastest-charging EV is heating up, and Zeekr just set a new benchmark. Now, it’s up to the competition to catch up!
