Great Wall Motor’s sub-brand Ora has recently started pre-sales for its first electric SUV model, the Ora 5, in China. This launch marks a significant step for Ora, which until now has mainly offered compact EVs such as the Ora Good Cat–known in Europe as the GWM Ora 03. GWM already has several EVs available in the European market, making this new model one to watch for potential future expansion overseas.

Dimensions and Design

The Ora 5 is a compact SUV with dimensions of 4,471 mm in length, 1,833 to 1,844 mm in width, and 1,641 mm in height, with a 2,720 mm wheelbase. Its design blends traditional SUV styling with signature “cat family” elements, reminiscent of earlier Ora models. The exterior features a range of color options, maintaining a modern yet practical look suited for urban and suburban environments.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the hood, the Ora 5 is equipped with a single electric motor generating 150 kW (201 horsepower). It can reach a top speed of around 170 km/h. The vehicle uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries supplied by Svolt Energy, available with nominal capacities of approximately 45.3 kWh and 58.3 kWh.

These offer a CLTC-rated range of about 480 km and 580 km, respectively, which aligns with the expectations for a compact electric SUV aimed at balancing city usability with occasional longer trips. It’s important to note that the WLTP standard used in Europe usually results in lower range figures than the CLTC cycle.

Features and Technology

The Ori 5 includes GWM’s third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra driver assistance system, offering features such as navigation on autopilot (NOA) and smart parking capabilities. The interior is equipped with a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, ambient lighting, and other comfort-focused touches. These technologies — especially advanced driver-assistance systems — are basically a must-have in China because of the fierce competition.

Market Position and Competitors

Priced competitively, the Ora 5 in China starts at roughly €13,950 based on current exchange rates. While currently exclusive to China, it is a strong competitor in the compact electric SUV market segment. If introduced in Europe, a market where GWM already sells several models, including the Ora 03 and Wey plug-in hybrids—it would compete with vehicles such as BYD’s Atto 3, Geely’s Galaxy E5, and Leapmotor’s B10. Actually, the B10 offers the best range of any EV priced under €30,000 in Europe.
